கடல்kadal
Kadal is Tamil for the sea, and the name of our studio. Everything we make lives somewhere in this one, from a lighthouse on the rocks down to the abyss.

0 m The surface
Above this line is the sea you can see from the shore. Below it is the sea that sees you.
0 – 200 m Sunlit zone
Light reaches here, so corals can grow, and most of the sea's life crowds into this thin, bright layer.
Shelf edge The drop-off
The shelf ends and the wall falls away. The water below is kilometres deep.
200 – 1,000 m Twilight zone
Only a faint blue survives. Every night its animals swim up to feed and sink again by dawn: the largest migration on Earth.
1,000 – 4,000 m Midnight zone
No sunlight at all. Nearly every light down here is made by an animal. The lamp is on now.
4,000 – 6,000 m Abyss
Near freezing and crushing. Around the vents, whole communities live on chemistry instead of sunlight.
The chart
Everything in this sea, lit by an anglerfish.
